Bangladesh: where life and cricket are synonymous

Bangladesh: where life and cricket are synonymous

In a country that has countless problems there are a few things that make the people of Bangladesh happy. Cricket happens to be one of them. Whenever the Bangladesh team has a cricket match at home or away Bangladeshis never fail to show up at the stadiums to support their team in huge numbers. Those who do not go to the stadium do not forget to follow the match. People at home remain glued to their television sets while the people at work watch the match in their smartphones or at least check the live scores online.

When Bangladesh win a match or series it is as if a festival has started with people celebrating in the streets shouting at the top of their voices. However, the Bangladesh team don't always win and their performances in major ICC tournaments isn't something to boast about. So when the team loses game after game the fans get depressed.

The bad performance of the team leads the frustrated fans to post statuses on social media, analysing the game and sharing their opinions on which players should be picked and who should be dropped.

The cricket craze started in Bangladesh after the Bangladesh Cricket team won the ICC trophy in 1997 and qualified for the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Bangladesh managed to win against Pakistan in their first ever World Cup campaign. From then on, cricket quickly became the most popular sport in the country over football and the Bangladesh team got the nickname "The Tigers". In the year 2000, Bangladesh gained test status and became a full member nation of ICC.

Cricket is not just played in the fields in Bangladesh, it is played everywhere. From the streets to empty plots to rooftops wherever there is space starting from little kids to young men all come out of their houses to play cricket in the afternoon till sunset.

It is not just a game to the Bangladeshi people, it is an emotion and part of life. This is why the players of the national cricket team are loved so much that they are the biggest celebrities of the country and people go crazy when they meet them in person.

Till now the biggest achievements of the Tigers has been to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2015, the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2017 and play the final of the Asia Cup thrice. The under-19 team has won the Under-19 Cricket World cup in 2020 and the fans now hope that the next generation will be the ones that will finally lift the senior Men's Cricket World Cup trophy for the first time for Bangladesh.
